Have You Ever Heard About inSSIDer?

inSSIDer is one of the best WiFi troubleshooting and optimization tool that can be run on both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It was once received the award for Best of Open Source Software in Networking in 2008 Inforworld Bossie Award. It has been created and developed by MetaGeek. One not-so-good information for end user about the tool is that it has not become a free, open-source application anymore since inSSIDer 3, which means you have to pay to get it.

Its current stable version is 4.2 which has been released in January 19, 2015. The tool itself is written in C language and it has many good features like showing WiFi network channel overlapping and pick up available network channel.

Also, it has ability to get network information such as wifi signal strength, vendor, MAC address, security, SSID and data rate.

The History

inSSIDer was purposely created to replace NetStumbler which was a very popular wifi scanner for Windows based Operating System. After few years inactive of development of the tool, it’s no longer supported with modern Windows OS or any higher version of OS than Window XP.

The System Requirement

In order to get the tool installed and running properly, specification of system requirement is needed for both Windows OS and Mac OS X.

Window:

  • Of course, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 or higher is a must so that the tool can be run properly.
  • For version 3.0 of inSSIDer, you will require to have at least Microsoft Windows Visa or higher.
  • For inSSIDer version 2.1, you will need Microsoft Windows XP SP2.

MAC OS X:

  • As long as you at least have OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 or higher, you are good to go with the application.

Where to get the tool?

Having said that, there are two main flavors of the application. One is a free, Open-Source and another one is paid version. Trust me, the paid version is better and has much improvement for its ability and features. But if you still want to try with the old one, you still have chance to play with it via below download bottom.
